Their first trip to the Atlantic Ocean was a huge success. It hands-down tops our list of places we've explored so far in this area of the country. You know that feeling you get when your child does something for the very first time? It's kind of like that when you get to watch them SEE something for the first time. #magical#beachcamping#Assateague#newepisode
Happy #nationalpubliclandsday! As most of you know, I’m a big, big fan of public lands. In the last 5 years, I’ve spent about as much time volunteering, working, and recreating on our country’s public lands as not. These special spaces are as vast as Yosemite, and as teeny as JFK’s birthplace in my hometown.
Can you imagine if our current government were deciding today whether or not we should have public lands in this country? There’s absolutely no way. The concept of public lands - vast sections of this country owned by every citizen and maintained by the government for the public’s best interest - is radical. I truly believe public lands have an immense power to empower, root, and unify any and every person in this country. These lands are ours to share, to look after, to seek refuge in, to fall in love with. What a privilege to have these spaces. Please cherish them and protect them. They are open to everyone in this country, and everyone in the world that comes together. It is important though, to remember that the First Nations to live on these lands were removed - relocated or killed - before these lands could even be considered “public.” I hope, in future administrations, the work continues to return land and access to resources to tribal nations, and to educate all of us about how these lands became public to begin with.
Right now, the Trump administration is trying to dismantle certain public lands and the agencies that administer them, by cutting and reorganizing staff, repealing regulations and opening up resource extraction leases to massive corporations, and attempting to destroy legislative precedents like the Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and Antiquities Act, which provide protection for wildlife species on our public lands, and create pathways for protecting more land from development. Please write to your representatives today about how important public lands are to you, and ask them to protect these places that are so, so special.
