  • #IndependenceMovementoftheDay is Mercia (Midlands or Greater Midlands)🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 Capital Birmingham (Disputed) Population 10,135,000 Area 11,053 sq mi Language English Religion Christian Currency Pound Sterling Part of UK The Midlands is a cultural and geographic area roughly spanning central England that broadly corresponds to the early medieval Kingdom of Mercia. Its largest city is Birmingham, and the region was important in the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. In modern terms the Midlands comprises the English statistical regions of the East Midlands and West Midlands. Almost all administrative functions for the English regions were abolished in 2012, although they remain constituencies of the European Parliament, and are proposed under the Sixth Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies to replace counties as the subdivisions of England used to draw parliamentary constituencies. Sovereign Mercia is an organisation that campaigns to establish a sovereign Mercian state in the English Midlands, and to generally promote the culture and identity of the region. Sovereign Mercia recognises the traditional Saint Alban's Cross charged with the white, double-headed Eagle of Leofric as the Mercian national flag, and has proposed Life is a Beautiful Book. Sovereign Mercia was founded in Birmingham in 1985, as the Ordo Anno Mundi (current name adopted 2008), with the aim of promoting the pre-Christian Mercian religion, a branch of Anglo-Saxon paganism, taking as its inspiration texts such as the Prose Edda and Oera Linda Book. It also became involved in the campaign for access to ancient sacred sites, such as stone circles. From 1993 it has held its annual conference during the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance each September in Staffordshire, and from 2015 at the Middle Earth Festival, Sarehole Mill, Birmingham. Its policies include the establishment of a legislature chosen by lot (sortition), an annually elected head of government, and a Pagan religious order of priestesses to serve as the judiciary. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 To suggest a country or movement follow and comment Text from Wikipedia 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

  • Felix in his work "Latin Vita sancti Guthlaci" from the 8th-centuryis writes about the arrival of the demons into Guthlac's dungeon: "They were ferocious in appearance, terrible in shape with great heads, long necks, thin faces, yellow complexions, filthy beards, shaggy ears, wild foreheads, fierce eyes, foul mouths, horses' teeth, throats vomiting flames, twisted jaws, thick lips, strident voices, singed hair, fat cheeks, pigeons breasts, scabby thighs, knotty knees, crooked legs, swollen ankles, splay feet, spreading mouths, raucous cries. For they grew so terrible to hear with their mighty shriekings that they filled almost the whole intervening space between earth and heaven with their discordant bellowings." ________________________________ Image: St Guthlac, tormented by demons, is handed a scourge by St Bartholomew . . #medieval #middleages #history #oldbooks #oldenglish #manuscript #saintguthlac #guthlac #scribe #monk #god #saintbartholomew #christian #christianity #croylandabbey #religion #england #mercia #english #britain #heritage #culture #europe

  • NŌÐUNG: “Daring One” - Reproduction 7th century Anglo-Saxon "Staffordshire Hoard" sword. . . First built in 2009 shortly after the discovery of the Staffordshire Hoard as a collaboration between member Dr Andrew Thompson, bladesmith Paul Binns / Paul Binns Swords and historic jeweller @georgeeaston8225 / @danegeldjewellery , this sword has served to help tell the story of the Staffordshire Hoard at educational events, showing how a few of the mangled pieces would have appeared when in-use. However, with emerging insights into Anglo-Saxon swords, and the Hoard in particular, and with advances in knowledge and capabilities since the original build, this year we undertook a project to re-hilt and breathe new life into this much loved old reproduction. . . Our biggest project this year and certainly the most intimidating, the re-hilting effort involved destructively wrenching the original jewelled fittings from the tang, just as our ancestors did before the Hoard was buried. . . The new hilt integrates up to 15 replica Hoard items (depending on accounting) - from the gold sheet and tray hilt-plates and their rivets and caps, to the jewelled collars and pommelcap by George Easton / Dangegeld. These are integrated with ox horn elements carved by member @aedthompson in line with archaeological precedent. . . The elaborate new hilt was completed in summer 2018, ready to be unveiled at our event at @suttonhoo_nt Sutton Hoo, subsequently appearing as the titular sword in the video for @winterfyllethband "Latch to A Grave", and is shown here in stills for the first time. . . #anglosaxon ( #saxon are cooler than #vikings #viking ) #staffordshirehoard #sword #medieval #suttonhoo #archaeology #reenactment #gold #jewellery #medievalart #beowulf #lotr #migrationperiod #vendelperiod #mercia #livinghistory

  • Whilst on the subject of the Norman conquest. What happened after the battle of Hastings? After the battle the Witan announced that Edgar the aetheling-last surviving male member of the house of wessex-would be king of England. Having been considered too young at the time when Harold ll was chosen. William expected the remaining english nobles to submit to him and upon hearing the news marched on Dover and then London. When William crossed the Thames, Edgars supporters abandoned him. While some fighting took place. The earls Edwin and morcar along with edgar surrendered to the conquered. Edgar was never crowned. William was crowned king on 25 December 1066. He returned to Normandy in the new year with edgar and the earls as hostages. #norman #saxon #england #mercia #wessex #northumbria #eastanglia #1066 #normanconquest #edgartheaetheling #medieval #knights #warriors #king #battle #battleofhastings
