THE HIP HINGE PT.1 - AS PART OF LOWER BACK PAIN MANAGEMENT: .
A hip hinge involves tipping forward from the hip whilst keeping a straight/neutral spine. It is essential as the foundation of many exercises in the gym, as well as to move efficiently with day to day tasks. .
I have noticed a lot of people find this very difficult, I think due to lack of body awareness. If you’ve never really done any exercise you may find you don’t have a great awareness of your body and how it moves. Particularly, if you injure your back or have low back pain, you lose spinal proprioception (awareness of the posture of your spine). Recovery from injuries, I find, is much more successful if you have good body awareness. So this is a good place to start to help increase it around the spine and pelvis! .
ONLY try it once you have NO back pain to bend forward and definitely start with NO weight. .
To do a hip hinge, you tip forward from the hip, while keeping your back neutral. To do this, you push your hips backwards, and your knees will bend slightly. Squeeze your glutes and the back of your legs on the way back up to the top.
