Petroleum-Zuid: Fading Industry
Petroleum South became in 1901 the very heart of the Antwerp and European petroleum industry.
Already in 1902 a jetty pier made it possible to transport petroleum directly from the ships to the depots of the companies via pipelines.
These above ground steel pipelines have been built in 1937 – 1939 in order to replace the existing pipelines and have been constructed above ground to solve the problem of pollution due to leakage. Therefore easy to repair and also very useful to tie up electric cables.
Today, this unique pipelines are a protected landmark and will be integrated in the future Blue Gate business park.
