Vultures are so gorgeous. They seem to get quite a bad rap, but they are essential to many ecosystems. Astonishingly they can digest anthrax, botulinum, cholera and rabies! It's thought they have such strong stomach acid that it can disolve even these lethal infectious diseases. Which is great because it makes vultures the perfect clean up crew - not only do they get rid of dead animal carcasses, they also halt the spread of disease that would otherwise occur.
There's not a lot of anthrax for these guys to get their beaks into at the Hawk Conservancy in Berkshire, but they seem to be doing ok nonetheless. Like this, sitting around, the collective noun for vultures is a committee. While eating it's a wake. And while flying it's a kettle.
