I had a bit of fun on my way to a bar called The Iron Fairies, in Bangkok, though, in this case, fun is being used ironically.
For three days in Bangkok, I was trying to get to a bar called the Iron Fairies. I was being told repeatedly, by taxi drivers, that the bar was too far away. They suggested that I find a closer bar!
Unfortunately, my wife, Anna was quickly convinced that no bar could possibly be worth the effort, inconceivable. She was trying to talk me into finding another option, also inconceivable!!! We decided to separate for the evening. I got into a cab that was seemingly held together by duct tape. That may be a bit of a stretch but it had a lot of duct tap holding the upholstery and dashboard together. Pinned to the ceiling were a dozen newspaper articles of the Thai king along with images of Buddha.
There was a distinct language barrier separating us so we rode along in silence. It was a little over an hour in traffic to get to the street that the Iron Fairies is on. Bangkok is in a perpetual state of traffic jam and at one point, we came to a complete standstill on the freeway. Nothing moved for a full 15 minutes while we all just sat there.
Finally, we came to the street that the bar is on. The driver asked me the number and I gave it. He replied, “No, no, too far, too far.” I’m not sure why he would drive me for a full hour and then give up when we finally arrived at the right street. He wanted me to get out, repeating the phrase, “Street too long, street too long.” I refused to get out of the car and asked him to keep driving. He refused to budge. During our conversation, a police officer came over and tapped on the window, asking us to move along. The driver explained the situation to the officer, and since I don’t speak Thai, I was unable to explain my position.
Outnumbered, I stepped out onto the street and thanked God that Anna hadn’t come with me. Our comfort levels for dealing with chaos and unpredictability are very different.
I began walking, and before I had covered a block and a half, I found it!!! Truly this felt nothing short of a miracle.
